South Carolina’s Economic Indicators Point Down

The latest measurements of South Carolina’s economy confirm what most already know: Things have taken a definite turn for the worse.
The Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina released its latest analysis Tuesday, with its set of leading indicators down 1.2% for September. The index is down 9.7% in the past 12 months. It is composed of the average manufacturing workweek (in hours), initial claims for unemployment insurance and real weekly earnings.
The report called this data “increasing evidence” that the state’s economy is in a recession, noting that the state shed 14,800 jobs in September. It offered no encouragement for the near future, either.
“The large drop in the index is evidence that the South Carolina economy is likely to see tougher times ahead before it sees any improvement,” the report said.
Components of the index highlight the fundamental weakness in the state’s economy. The average manufacturing workweek decreased 0.9% for September while inflation-adjusted earnings dropped by 1.4%. September’s seasonally adjusted residential construction dropped 14%.
Another interesting, if not heartening, number in the report: Real retail sales were down 0.5% for the month and 0.2% annually.
The credit crunch makes it difficult to foresee any improvement, the report said.
“Until financial markets stabilize and regain normal operations, it is very unlikely that there will be improvement in the economy,” the report concluded.

Unemployment in the construction and manufacturing industries dominated a bleak jobs landscape in South Carolina during October, when the jobless rate soared to 8% from 7.3% in September.
October’s jobless rate was the highest rate for the state since 1983, said Roosevelt T. Halley, executive director of the S.C. Employment Security Commission.
Rural counties continued to dominate the list of highest unemployment rates. Allendale was No. 1, with 17% unemployment, followed by Marion, at 15.8%, and Marlboro, at 15.4%.
Urban counties typically fared better, and Lexington County had the lowest jobless rate in the state, at 5.9%. Richland County had 7.1%.
By comparison, in October of last year, Lexington County sat at 4.6% unemployment, and Richland County had 5.6%.
The future’s not so bright
The outlook for the rest of the year does not give much comfort, said Susan Crocker, a human resources consultant and former vice president for human resources at BMW Manufacturing.
BMW’s car-building plant near Greer will shut down for two weeks — Dec. 22 through Jan. 4 — she said. With 4,500 workers directly employed by BMW and thousands more working at BMW suppliers in the region, the Upstate will continue to feel the impact of a slowing economy at least through early next year.
“We’ve always talked about the positive effect of the trickle-down effect of BMW. When they are shut down for two weeks, it’s also going to have a negative trickle-down impact,” Crocker said.
She has been working with clients to advise workers to save paid-time-off eligibility to preserve some income during the period the plants are shut down.
Crocker said it’s unlikely the construction work force will rebound soon, either. New building permits are less than half what they were a year ago, she said.
Construction has shed 18,600 workers in the past year, the data show, and manufacturing was off by 8,400 jobs.
The state did register a slight increase of 800 construction jobs during October, a surprise to Mark Nix, executive director of the Home Builders Association of South Carolina.
He’s part of a national bloc of homebuilders and real estate companies lobbying for Congress to extend a stimulus package to the housing market. That group wants Congress to increase tax credits for home purchases and extend the eligibility for those credits beyond first-time homebuyers.
The group also wants Congress to take action to lower interest rates and prevent foreclosures. A full list of the group’s goals is available online.
Giving up
Crocker said the level of discouragement is high among workers, causing many to stop looking for new jobs.
“Eight percent is about the highest I’ve seen in my lifetime, and I’ve been in human resources for 30 years,” Crocker said.
“People are hunkered down,” she said. “They look at the economy, they see an ad for another job and they think ‘I better stay where I am.’”
That effect has made it tougher for companies to fill high-paying positions when they do decide to hire.
A national trend
The S.C. employment data mirrored conditions nationwide. “This increase appears to be consistent with the overall worsening of the nation’s economy as a result of the turmoil in the housing and financial markets,” said the Employment Security Commission’s Halley.
The state’s labor force totaled 2,172,392 in October, up 13,688 over the September level. The number of unemployed rose 16,549 to 173,467 in October. The national unemployment rate also rose sharply in October, to 6.5% from the September figure of 6.1%.
Halley said the number of jobs in South Carolina showed little change over the month, registering a modest increase of 4,100. Unexpected gains were recorded in retail trade and construction. The gains, however, are likely temporary as these industries are expected to mirror national trends over the next few months and fall below normal seasonal levels.
Leisure and hospitality showed a seasonal loss of 3,500 jobs, and manufacturers reduced their payrolls by 1,400. Professional and business services added 2,700 jobs in October, mostly in temporary help agencies. Overall, nonfarm jobs in October were nearly 21,000 below what they were in 2007.
Moore School sees bleak S.C. economy until mid-2009

The Moore School of Business issued a dire economic outlook for South Carolina in 2009, predicting shrinking job prospects for those out of work and a rising unemployment rate.
The University of South Carolina economists presented the austere forecast at the Moore School’s annual Economic Outlook Conference held Wednesday.
Economists Paulo Guimaraes and Douglas Woodward predicted a net loss of 22,000 jobs next year and said the unemployment rate in the state will rise to 8.6%. Between February and October 2008, the state’s unemployment rate went from a relatively low 5.5% to 8%, a 25-year high.
“The South Carolina data indicate that the economy is in recession, and it is unlikely that there will be improvement in the economy until at least the middle of 2009,” said Guimaraes, a professor in the Division of Research.
Guimaraes and Woodward, an economics professor and director of the Division of Research, presented their findings to business and government leaders who attended the conference, sponsored by the Moore School and the Palmetto Institute.
In 2008, the construction industry shed 17,700 jobs in South Carolina, Guimaraes said, and job losses in this sector are expected to continue in 2009, with a decline of 8.3%. Single-family housing permits are expected to be off 35.5% next year. This comes on the heels of a similar drop in the number of such permits in 2008, they said.
Statewide, retail sales are projected to rise 0.5% in 2009. South Carolina’s manufacturing employment is expected to retrench, with a projected job decline of 4.4%. The forecast predicts an 8.7% drop in nondurable goods manufacturing jobs and a 6.4% decline in durable goods industry employment. Other sectors, such as government and professional and business services, also will continue to shed jobs next year, putting further pressure on the labor market, the report said.
Personal income, another broad measure of the state’s economic activity, should climb by 3.3% in 2009, down from 4.7% in 2008 and 5.4% in 2007.
“The ongoing surprises emanating from the financial sector make it difficult to forecast the trends in the real economy,” Woodward said. “We will not have a recovery until the financial markets clear up and lift this cloud of uncertainty shrouding business conditions.”
Two metropolitan areas registered positive job growth through September 2008, compared with a year earlier: Spartanburg (2.1%), and Greenville (0.5%).
Residential construction plummeted in 2008 after a disappointing 2007. Residential construction measured by square footage dropped 60% in Sumter, 48.4% in Anderson, 48.1% in Anderson, 46.2% in Charleston, 41.1% in Spartanburg, 34.1% in Columbia and 26.1% in Greenville.

Sorry I had to get my two cents in there… You do see what kind of people are out there trying to take advantage of you right? Do not do work for a person who lives in another state with property in your state without having the contract amount in escrow somewhere so you can either make draws as the work is being done, or payment in full after inspection by the person who is holding your money in escrow, know what I mean?

What other benefits are there for advertising on the WebSites?
Now it gets interesting folks! If you have a WebSite and you use the right wording in your advertisements with the classified WebSites, you will see when you do a keyword search for whatever that your advertisement is ranked in THE SEARCH ENGINES!!
On one occasion I had like 5 rankings on the first page of Google in the top 10 for keywords stock cabinets – prefab cabinets, from the search engines from different classified WebSites! That is just one example. I have had many other different keywords rank in the top 10 with my classified advertisements!
The trick for KEYWORD rankings with the search engines on the classified WebSites. People think that it is hard to get your website ranked in he top 10 with the search engines. IT IS EASY! And the same method works on your WebSite as well! The only thing you need to remember is this.
Make links from your KEYWORD to other relevant sections of your WebSite if you have a WebSite. This gives considerable relevance to the search engines; making your KEYWORD more important, which in turn makes your page rankings go up! Or in the case of online classifieds, making your advertisements rankings go up!

The classified WebSites allow you to specify the length of time you want your advertisement to stay up and running. I have never paid one red cent for a classified add! You should not either! The only thing you need to do is not to go over 30 days. Other people will put an add right behind yours so your rankings on the classifieds will slip down. Every time you post it will be on top under the PAID classifieds. But it is not worth paying anything for what you will be doing, when you can do it FREE.
You can also choose what state and city you want your advertisement in! So look closely when you start.

Another trick for advertising on the FREE classified WebSites. Not all of the WebSites but a few ask you if you want to advertise not only in the city you choose, but the COUNTY of the city you choose (more cities), WHOLE STATE (even more cities) and THE NATION (every city listed)! Some classified WebSites will ask you to pay for the listings. Never pay for the additional city, state, and nation additional listings when you can get them for FREE on some of the WebSites I have listed on this page!

FREE is always a good thing. Being able to advertise your services or products FREE on these WebSites, obtain more exposure with all of the search engines, and get LEADS for your company is even better! I have had more luck with my email and placement of online classified advertisements than I have had paying the phone book $379.00 a month for a dollar page advertisement!
With FREE, you do have to put in long hours placing adds. You do not have to put in long hours sending Emails! I love it when my computer does all the work for me and all I have to do is answer the phone or reply to an Email!

Why am I telling other people how I did this without any formal Internet education? That’s easy. I want you to believe me.
The only people who have called me off of the yellow pages advertisement are people looking for work, or trying to sell me something. Finally I had enough of the telemarketers and the people who are looking for work, plus I really do not have the money to pay for my add in the yellow pages any more, so I had my phone turned off and will not advertise with the yellow pages until the economy gets a whole lot better. Don’t get me wrong now; the yellow pages gave me 20 to 30 leads a week prior to 2007. But that was a long, long time ago…
After Christmas I will have time to upload more classified advertisements on the internet. Until then I will let all of them expire and start over with number one placement of my ads then! Spring will be coming soon. Time to repair your home and do upgrades.
I still get people every day calling me looking for work. The only thing I can tell them is I only have enough work for me. The leads I get to run my appointments with are not coming out of the dollar size add I have in the Yellow Pages under General Contractors, (Look for a big black and white add) 90% come from my Email campaign and the other 10% come from my online classifieds.
I won’t lie to you. It has taken a long time to type up – lay out – do both HTML markup on the pages I can submit to, and another copy and paste of TXT only in other advertisements.
You also will need to have some high resolution pictures, not more than 500KB, (mine are around 450KB) plus the same pictures in low resolution for the limitations you will run into while posting your advertisements. When you have pictures you get more hits on you advertisement.
All of this takes a GREAT BIT OF TIME! To do it right you will probably need a good full 5 days and be familiar with picture formats, HTML markup, making links back to your website if you have one.
When you just start doing this it will probably intimidate you a might, (don’t you love that Southern droll?). Don’t let it get to you. With everything good it still takes time. The more you work with pictures, the better you will get. The more you work with HTML, the better you will get! I have no doubt that anyone who reads this page and follows what I have done, can do the very same thing!
When you’re ready to try marketing using Emails let me know. It will definitely surprise you, just as I have surprised you with all of the Google listings for my company, and classified rankings on Google for specific keywords. You do know that those keywords are not the only ones I have listed on all the classifieds, right? LOL Well I have to keep some of my secretes for myself...
You too will find that this system combined with Email marketing will provide you too with additional opportunities to make money!
Be creative with your advertisements and email campaigns! Do not rush to use your marketing tools. Take your time to design and word your advertisements to catch the eyes of all your prospects BEFORE YOU BEGIN!!
SALES:
If you are in SALES and have never had a prospect hang up on you when on the phone, or close a door on you, you’re not much of a sales person! Don’t get me wrong when I say that. Always be RESPECTFUL to your prospect, or would be client, just push it as far as you can to get the DEAL. When they hang up on you, or close the door, you sure don’t have much in the area of a deal anyhow. Do you? But you have done everything you could to get that DEAL so be proud that you pushed to get that appointment. Be proud that you tried to get them to sign that contract! Learn how to close a deal if you never had someone teach you. I feel I have not worked until they tell me NO at least 4 or 5 times from the start! Learn to use their objections against them. Show them the benefits of your service or products compared to everyone else. People think that SALES is easy, let me tell you now it IS NOT! Read some books on closing. Go to Blockbuster and rent a DVD on SALES or CLOSING. It will help you more than you could ever know! You have to be prepared before you start burning through your LEADS.

Doing this optimization for keywords is just fun to me. I like a challenge. This was my personal challenge because I needed to promote my services. Now I’m switching gears, not to promote my residential construction, but to promote what I have accomplished for everyone else.
Basically I’m getting out of doing the work of a home renovator and now starting to promote my competitions services and keywords with optimizing their websites and keywords for all the major search engines.
Does that mean I will lose my ranking on the search engines? NO, you can only lead by example, plus I will have my competitions services and products listed on my site to help promote their WebSite.
Will I still do home improvements? Well that depends on the economy, and right now there are a whole lot of people who will do and tell you anything to get the job. The problem I have is simple. I will never jeopardize my integrity, character, or name by using inferior materials or skinflint on craftsmanship! That means I can not match the price of everyone who is unemployed, telling you how much you will save with them…
What have I done to stay busy?
Let me recap what I have accomplished. At one time I had over 17,200 referrals to my WebSite ArtisanSpecialties.com from Google. At this point I’m letting all my classified advertisements expire so when I post again I will be up in the first place. I still have 204 keywords ranked in the 1st position with multiple search engines. I also have marketed my services using direct Emailing.
What kills me is when I have applied for superintendent jobs with construction, the people who I interview with have heard or seen my company on the internet. Reason being is I’m ranked higher than they are with my keywords on the search engines!
The question you have is why in the world have I not been more successful with getting jobs? I believe it is because of the economy. No one wants to spend money when you do not know if you will have your job cut out right from under you! The people who do want you to work will only hire the lowest bidder on the job… and I’m an American so that rules me out.
The most work I have had was working for 2 temporary services for 3 months out of the last 18 months making less than I was paying my employees, and 6 small jobs of my own.
I started an email campaign and had $300,000.00 dollars in contracts out within 6 weeks!! Boy now you’re talking about feeling good! I called reduced prices, cut out work, no one singed. Going by the jobs located in the Columbia area, the ones that were doing the work had all 3rd world people, (I’m trying to be politically correct here).
Sorry, but I only hire AMERICANS or LEGAL immigrants, and that is where I stand, with or without a job or income. Until immigration starts going by residential sites all small construction companies like mine are in sad shape.
